About us

Ina le Roux did a doctorate on Venda Folk Tales while lecturing at Venda University.  Her research lead her to Pastor Piet Mavhetha who introduced her to various story tellers. Overwhelmed by the lack of economic opportunity in the area she came up with the idea of embroidering the folk tales on quilts, wall hangings, bags, etc.  You can find much more ... here: www.tambani.co.za
This blog is fully incorporated both in the Tambani Project and as part of the www.tambani.co.za site. We wish to share stories of the lives of our embroiderers and discuss individual malappies with their relating folk tales. Excellent tutorials will be added to the blog helping you to make wall hangings, actually anything you like, with our products!

About the Venda women:
In the very north of South Africa lies a communicty of Venda people. The women are very poor, illiterate and unemployed. Husbands often drift towards the cities, many never return. In many households there are only grandmothers caring for grandchildren. These traditional Venda women have a magnificent oral tradition. In the evenings they sit round a cooking fire and tell these age old folk tales to the children. The women are now embroidering scenes from their folk tales which come to you with a copy of the story translated into English. The Tambani Project perpetuates the Venda Oral Tradition and the women are able to earn something for the first time in their lives.
